JOHNATHAN DOODY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, Phi Gamma Delta, a philanthropist organization of the University of Alberta, provides two scholarships of $750 to outstanding incoming students at the University of Alberta. In past years, the application was completed by paper; however, applicants now have the choice to complete an online version. If you have time, I would be grateful if we could discuss the scholarship for five minutes. The website address for the scholarship is http://phigam.ca/info/the-johnathan-doody-memorial-scholarship/. Students must fill out two short one-page essays on the topic of friendship, knowledge, service, morality and excellence, provide high school transcripts and complete a few short-answer questions. Previous scholarship winners have become notable leaders in the university community.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of the C.R.A.A. Scholarship Program is to provide C.R.A.A. players who are of good character, have demonstrated hockey ability and who qualify academically, with financial assistance to further their education at a recognized Post-Secondary Education Institution.

ELIGIBILITY:
Players registered with a C.R.A.A. team in the current year and who have previously participated as a player for a minimum of two years with C.R.A.A., are continuing their education into a Post-Secondary Institution, or, are presently full-time or part-time attendance at a recognized Post-Secondary Institution, are eligible to apply for a Scholarship.

Players who have participated for a minimum of three years with C.R.A.A., but are not registered with S.W.A.A. in the current year are also eligible for a Scholarship if such application is made no later than one year following the last year registered with the Calgary Royals Athletic Association. C.R.A.A. Scholarships may be held concurrently with other scholarships.

* No individual is eligible for more than one C.R.A.A. Scholarship.
AWARD:
The value of the Scholarships is determined yearly by C.R.A.A. and will be announced separately.  The full amount of the award will be paid to the individual on or after September 1, upon providing confirmation of full-time registration at a Post-Secondary Institution.  Upon request the Scholarship may be used to reimburse only the direct tuition costs whilst attending in a part-time capacity.  The Scholarship award must be activated within the academic year following the date of the award, although, the award may be delayed up to two (2) years with the approval of the Board of Trustees.

STU PEPPARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:
The Stu Peppard Memorial Scholarship is named in honor of Stu Peppard (Mr. Hockey), whose contributions to Minor Hockey in Calgary were exemplary.  He valued sportsmanship, good character and commitment to the sport of hockey.  Applicants receiving the Stu Peppard Memorial Scholarship shall be considered to have outstanding leadership, sportsmanship, and scholastic qualities with a strong commitment to the sport of hockey.

JEFF NIEHAUS SCHOLARSHIP:
The Jeff Niehaus Scholarship is in memory of Jeff Niehaus who passed away tragically on June 11, 1996 at the age of 18 years.  Jeff was a Character Hockey Player, worked hard and was a Total Team Player.  He had lots of energy and always brought that energy to the rink.  His love of life was on display at the arena, you would always find him smiling, laughing and joking around with teammates and coaches.  He had a desire to compete and improve, as evident by his “Most Improved Player” award for the 1995/1996 season.  Jeff was a joy to be around and from a coaches standpoint, Jeff brought everything a coach desires to the arena: a desire to improve, a great work ethic and a winning attitude, with the team being looked at as the number one priority over individual statistics.

DALE DUPONT SCHOLARSHIPS:
These Scholarships are named in honor of Dale Dupont, son of Lola Dupont and the late Emile Dupont.  Dale exemplified the characteristics that the Calgary Royals Athletic Association expounds; sportsmanship and education.  Dale continued to participate as a player, a coach, and a student after his playing days for C.R.A.A. were over.  Dale passed away on February 12, 1975 at the age of 22 years.

TERRY SPINK SCHOLARSHIP:
The Terry Spink Scholarship is named in memory of Terry Spink who passed away on November 21, 1991 at the age of 18 years.  Terry played five years of AA and AAA Hockey with S.W.A.A. and was awarded two scholarships.  Terry was an outstanding student who graduated from Western Canada High School in 1990, were he was an honors student inhis second year of studies at the University of Calgary.  Terry exemplified the characteristics of sportsmanship, leadership and education encouraged by C.R.A.A.

DAVID FERREL SCHOLARSHIP:
The David Ferrel Scholarship is presented in memory of David Ferrel who passed away tragically on November 29, 1997 at the age of 17 years. David played in the Royals program for three years; being a gifted athlete who loved hockey and the fun it brought to his life.  David could often be seen outdoors at various times of the year, either playing golf or snow boarding, when he wasn’t at the hockey arena. David showed a strong awareness of those around him when he played; he was always a gentleman, putting hockey, sportsmanship and education into perspective and working diligently himself, towards attaining a C.R.A.A. Scholarship Award.

ROYALS TEAM SCHOLARSHIP:
At the end of the season, C.R.A.A. teams are required to close their bank accounts, leaving excess, unused funds.  Over the past years most of the teams have chosen to donate these funds to the Royals Team Scholarship Fund.  The Royals Team Scholarship recognizes these donations and a Scholarship is presented to the player who best exemplifies leadership and team play during the hockey season.

KYLE BLAIS SCHOLARSHIP:
Kyle played for CRAA from 1998-2003.  He always played on a “GOLD”team.  He played on two teams that went on to play at the provincials. Kyle was extremely and absolutely dedicated to hockey and had theability to pull his team together.  He was a leader in the dressingroom.  He was a committed goaltender who never stopped wanting toimprove.  Sadly, Kyle was killed in a car accident caused by a drunkdriver on November 28, 2005 – he was 22 years old.

ED MELVILLE SCHOLARSHIP:
Ed Melville passed away October 18, 2007 at the age of 74 years. Working quietly in the background, Ed Melville contributed countless hours to benefit CRAA players.  Ed became a member of CRAA in 1995 and Honorary Life Member in 1983.  His goal was always to ensure that anyboy who wanted to play hockey had the opportunity to do so.  Ed worked tirelessly to raise money through many different fund-raisers.  He was always adamant that the money was to be used for the players.  A recipient of a hockey scholarship, Ed always said that this changed his life!
